SUMMARY

You can’t just “change a frame.” When replacing a frame, there are a bunch of different steps—in this case, twenty-three. The cost of replacing a frame depends largely on how many steps the boat owner is able to perform on his own. To roll an angle frame at a workshop is perhaps 20–30% of the whole job, and this is not counting the removal and installation of the interiors.

The difference in cost between letting a boatbuilder replace the frame and having the boat owner just get help with the parts he can’t do himself is far greater than most people think. The variety of steps and the many different possible solutions also explain why a boatbuilder has a difficult time to providing a cost analysis by telephone. This complexity is also true for most other parts of wooden boat restoration. I hope that this chapter does not persuade you to give up on such a difficult job, but that it creates a little understanding of how much is hidden behind a simple expression such as “to change a frame.”
